How to fund a Polygon game purchase from Ethereum

To fund a Polygon game purchase from Ethereum, bridge the token the game accepts to Polygon PoS, then pay the purchase from your Polygon balance. The bridge moves value between networks; it does not move a game account or make every Ethereum token usable in the game. First check the game’s listed network and payment token. Polygon PoS and Polygon zkEVM are separate networks, so a token sent to the wrong one may not be available to spend.

What do you need before bridging funds?

You need the right network, an accepted asset, and gas on both sides. Your wallet must hold ETH on Ethereum to pay for the deposit transaction. If the token is an ERC-20, the bridge may ask you to approve the token contract before it can deposit it. That approval is a separate Ethereum transaction and also costs ETH.

On Polygon PoS, transactions use POL for gas. So bridging only the game’s payment token can leave you with funds you cannot move or spend. Polygon Support’s guidance on bridging and its wallet setup instructions identify POL as the Polygon Mainnet gas token. The Polygon Bridge’s route-dependent funding timing is useful context when planning a transfer: a deposit to Polygon and a withdrawal back to Ethereum do not follow the same path.

How do you bridge from Ethereum to Polygon?

Use Polygon Portal’s bridge interface to select Ethereum as the source and Polygon PoS as the destination. Connect the wallet that holds your funds, choose the asset and amount, and check that the destination address is yours. If the token is not listed or the Portal does not support it, do not assume that a similarly named token is equivalent; tokens can have different contract addresses.

  • Choose the token the game accepts, and check its contract address if the game provides one.
  • Enter the amount. For an ERC-20, review and approve the allowance if the wallet requests it.
  • Confirm the deposit in your wallet and pay the Ethereum gas fee in ETH.
  • Wait for the transfer to complete, then check the Polygon balance in your wallet before opening the game.

Polygon Support describes the native bridge as locking the deposited asset on Ethereum and crediting an equivalent pegged token on Polygon. This is a bridge transfer, not a market swap: it does not automatically convert one payment token into another. Portal may show a Refuel option to include destination gas in the transfer. If you do not use it, make sure you bridge some POL as well, or obtain POL on Polygon before trying to transact.

How do you make the game purchase?

Switch your wallet to Polygon PoS and open the game’s purchase screen. The game or its marketplace submits a transaction on Polygon; your wallet pays the network fee in POL, while the purchase amount comes from the token the game accepts. Review the token, amount, recipient or contract, and network in the wallet prompt before signing. A displayed balance on Ethereum does not fund this Polygon transaction.

If the purchase fails, check the selected network, the payment token balance, and the POL balance. Also check whether the game requires a token approval, which grants a contract permission to spend a specified amount. Approve only the amount needed when the wallet offers that choice. Polygon Support notes that some tokens require mapping before they can move through the PoS bridge, so an unsupported asset may need a different route or may not be usable there.

What happens if you want to move funds back?

A withdrawal starts on Polygon and finishes on Ethereum. Polygon Support’s withdrawal instructions describe a Polygon transaction followed by a later claim on Ethereum; you need POL for the first step and ETH for the claim. This return route can take longer than depositing, because it relies on Polygon’s checkpoint and claim process. Keep enough gas on each network and do not treat a pending withdrawal as spendable on Ethereum.
